Compton-thick X-ray absorption in the Seyfert galaxies Tololo 0109–383 and ESO 138–G1
We present analyses of the ASCA X-ray spectra of two Seyfert galaxies, Tololo 0109– 383 and ESO 138–G1. In both cases, spectral fitting reveals two statistically acceptable continuum models: Compton reflection and partial covering. Both spectra have strong iron Kα lines, with equivalent widths greater than 1.5 keV. These large equivalent widths are suggestive of heavier obscuration than that di...
متن کاملNuclear obscuration in the high - ionization Seyfert 2 galaxy Tol 0109 – 383
We report the BeppoSAX detection of a hard X-ray excess in the X-ray spectrum of the classical high-ionization Seyfert 2 galaxy Tol 0109–383. The X-ray emission of this source observed below 7 keV is dominated by reflection from both cold and ionized gas, as seen in the ASCA data. The excess hard X-ray emission is presumably due to the central source absorbed by an optically thick obscuring tor...
متن کاملChandra observations of Abell 2199
We present results from an analysis of two Chandra observations of the rich, nearby galaxy cluster Abell 2199. We find evidence (having corrected for projection effects) for radial gradients in temperature and metallicity in the X-ray emitting gas: the temperature drops from kT ∼ 4.2 keV at R=200 kpc to 1.6 keV within R=5 kpc of the centre. The metallicity rises from ∼ 0.3 solar at R=200 kpc to...
متن کاملChandra Observations of Three SDSS
The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) quasars at redshift z ≈ 6 (Fan et al. 2001) are the most distant condensed objects known in the universe. X-ray observations of them are of great importance; e.g., to study the cosmic time evolution of X-ray emission and to assess the detectability of quasar X-ray emission at even larger redshifts. All three quasars were easily detected in X-rays even in thes...
متن کاملChandra Observations of 12 Luminous Red Quasars
We present results of a study of 12 dust-reddened quasars with 0.4 < z < 2.65 and reddenings in the range 0.15 < E(B − V ) < 1.7. We obtained ACIS-S X-ray spectra of these quasars, estimated the column densities towards them, and hence obtained the gas:dust ratios in the material obscuring the quasar. We detect all but one of the red quasars in the X-rays. Even though there is no obvious correl...
